  biography    jacques “jackie” sionis, born to roman and circe sionis, was regarded as a deeply troubled child. from an early age, jackie was prone to saying things most children wouldn’t have even possessed the capacity to understand.
during breakfast one morning, at the age of six, he innocently remarked to his mother, “daddy wants to shoot mr. falcone in the face.”circe was, understandably, horrified.roman denied ever saying such a thing, while his wife chastised him endlessly for discussing such matters around their son. the thought, however, had never left roman’s lips.it would hardly be the last incident of its kind.months later, while receiving his vaccinations, jackie quietly informed his mother that the doctor was “worried about his marriage to his wife.” the physician, caught completely off guard, denied it immediately. nevertheless, the strain in his expression said enough.as the years passed, jackie’s episodes only grew in frequency. his teachers accused him of having a morbid imagination, as he often spoke of resentment, desires, and violent fantasies. specialists were desperate for answers. eventually their concerns gave way to fear.at nine years old, jacques sionis was sent away for psychiatric evaluation. doctors concluded that he was suffering from intrusive thoughts, delusions, and the inability to distinguish his fantasies from reality. in the end, they diagnosed him broadly with psychosis. for a time, they attempted outpatient therapy and medication.that failed, however. and they never even considered that those thoughts weren’t even his own.shortly after his eleventh birthday, jackie was institutionalized inside the horrifying confines of arkham asylum. by now, he was starting to learn that the thoughts he had didn’t belong to him. it was overwhelming to be there, in the end. even with solitary confinement for most of early days, he could hear the other inmates thoughts. calculated murders, heinous fantasies, ridiculous delusions—it haunted him.his parents rarely came to visit him. roman even more so than circe. they visited mostly on holidays, if even at all.in time, though, arkham grew to become his home.when the doctors concluded he was stable enough to enter general population, he was painfully vulnerable. scared. strangely enough, multiple inmates took him under their wings.for all its horrors, arkham did raise him.it’s why for awhile, escape didn’t become a priority.everyone was aware arkham was a revolving door for people like the friends he made, and eventually there was no one left there to protect jackie. a particularly vicious inmate that everyone called, “loony larry”, was particularly hostile to him. some twenty years ago, his father had laced poison within the wife’s makeup personally from janus cosmetics, driving her insane and causing her eventual death.larry had sustained horrible scarring across his face, and severe mental instability from the trauma. he attempted to cease an opportunity to “get his lick back” against roman, and that was by murdering his son. he caught jackie off guard when he’d attacked him, and the two struggled violently. despite his struggling, he wasn’t physically strong enough to fight him off.in the scuffle, with his hand around his wrist, jackie had told larry to “fuck off” and “die.” so the man did just that.taking the makeshift blade, larry stabbed himself in the face. once. twice. again. again. and again.eventually, there was no movement. not even a twitch.the staff found him sobbing uncontrollably, covered head to toe in larry’s blood.they ruled that larry’s death was a consequence of his deteriorating mental health. but jackie knew that wasn’t the case.it wasn’t a stretch that if he could hear thoughts, he also could compel them, too. and eventually, for his semi-annual reassessment, he made his move. with the psychiatrist in the room, jackie compelled the woman to write whatever she needed to in order to get him freed.

jackie almost always wears gloves due to the immense fear people who are aware of his powers have of him controlling them, most of the time unfounded. it has been repeatedly drilled into his head to not touch anyone without them on, to the point he now genuinely grows anxious without them. most of the time, he outright refuses to compel anyone who he has any connection with. though, it should be noted that he isn't perfect, and may still compel people he loves and trusts, especially if he believes its for the greater good. he is not infallible, either. he can be incredibly violent and often forces people to brutalize themselves in retaliation for hurting him or the people he cares about. depending on how grevious, he may even force them to take their own life. this often does leave him with a degree of guilt, which reinforces his cycle of drug and alcohol abuse.
